Non-MPO teachers, staff continue demo

Soon after they were dispersed by police at noon, teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions resumed their sit-in on the Jatiya Press Club premises yesterday demanding their inclusion in the Monthly Pay Order (MPO), reports UNB.

They started their sit-in programme for the fourth consecutive day in the morning to press home their demand. But around 12pm, police asked them to leave the place as the protesting teachers and employees had no permission for staging the demonstration.

The law enforcers dispersed them as they refused to go away, said witnesses. Dr Binoy Bhusan Roy, General Secretary of Non-MPO Educational Institution Teachers' and Employees' Federation, told that police evicted several hundred teachers and employees, leaving some of them injured.

However, they again gathered at the place and started their demonstration, he said. If the government does not announce a gazette for enlisting them into the MPO facilities, they would continue the movement, Binoy said. Earlier on December 31, 2017, teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions started observing a hunger strike unto death to press for their demand.

However, they ended the demonstrations on January 5 last after getting Prime Minister's assurance of meeting their demand. As there is no specific budget allocation for the 2018-2019 fiscal year in this regard, they again started their demonstrations on Sunday.
