After the past few days of pounding, the rain has started slowing down, even though the monsoon has set in all over the country.
It is also active over the North Bay, where convective clouds have started gathering, making the sea choppy. Rain and thundershowers would slow down in the next three days, the Met Office said yesterday.
The rain has already slowed down in Chittagong, where very heavy rainfall left the port city virtually floating. In Rangamati, landslides killed 12 people in the past three days following a record 264mm of rainfall until 6am on Tuesday.
Heavy rain in the hills around also pushed up the south-eastern hilly rivers, like Sangu and Matamuhuri. They are likely to go up further, carrying the water from the adjoining north-eastern Indian states, which too had very heavy rain.These two hilly rivers are expected to rise rapidly in the next 24 hours, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said yesterday.
In Habiganj, the Khowai, fed by waters rolling down from the hills of Tripura across the border, is also in spate. The river was flowing 228cm above its danger level and was rising further, as Tripura had very heavy rain in the past few days.
Other north-eastern rivers, such as the Surma and the Kushiyara and Manu, are also flowing above their danger levels.
