People are building bamboo bridges across the villages of Lalua union in Kalapara upazila. They have been forced to take up the job on their own seeing the inertness of the authorities in repairing the damaged culverts and iron bridges. The flood control embankment, which is designed to protect the union from tidal surges, has breached at several places. Sea water enters through the breaches and keeps flooding the area and tearing off road network.
The bridges and culverts, so vital for maintaining road communication, have remained battered and damaged by tidal surges. Saline water enters the villages through damaged flood control embankment at Charipara and other points when water level rises in the Ramnabad River, which is connected to the sea, during the period of depression, full moon and dark moon. Now that the bridges and culverts are lying unrepaired for long the villagers themselves are putting up bamboo bridges alongside the damaged structures. The people, especially the elderly ones and school children, are crossing those places taking risk. Witnesses said the tidal water has also inundated homesteads, flooded crop fields and washed away shrimp enclosures of villages in Lalua union. They said the people living close to the breached embankment are the worst sufferers. Afipa Begum, a house wife of Poshorbunia village, said people’s sufferings mount during the nights of full moon and dark moon. Mir Tarikuzzaman Tara, Lalua UP chairman, said the people of the always take the pains from the effect of high tide and ebb tide due to the long pending repair work of breached flood control embankment.
