New decision from ministry

Walking back from the decision of the re-registration of SIM cards, State Minister for Posts and Telecommuni-cations Tarana Halim yesterday said the telecommunication operators will provide lists of all mobile subscribes to the NID (National Identity) Registration Wing of the Election Commission soon and the EC will scrutiny the lists, reports UNB.
“Scrutinising the lists of subscribers, the NID Registration Wing will identity the real subscribers and fake subscribes. And two copies of separate lists of actual subscribers and fake subscribes will hand over the ministry as well as BTRC,” she told reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting with chief executive officers of mobile phone operators.
On Wednesday, Tarana Halim said the re-registration of SIMs will start on Sunday (Sept 13) and continue till December 13.
“Today, we change our decision to minimise the sufferings of people,” she said, mobile operators will ask their unauthorised subscribers to register their SIM cards as soon as possible. “If the unauthorised SIM subscribers are unable to do so despite repeated warnings, their SIM cards will be deactivated permanently.”

The junior minister said many subscribers brought one more SIMs showing a single NID, and in that cases, the operators will phone them to know whether they own the SIMs or not. If the subscribers do not claim the SIMs sold against their NIDs, the authorities will deactivate the SIMs, she said, adding that the upcoming programme of SIM verification will start from Sunday and it will continue.
Tarana Halim said if unauthorised SIMs will be found after conclusion of the upcoming initiative, the mobile operators will have to pay a huge amount of money as fine. She said the operators will continue their advertisement to sensitise their subscribers to register their SIMs as soon as possible.
The state minister said the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will soon sign an agreement with the NID Registration Wing of EC aiming to verify SIM cards.
