Floods continue to recede

With the country’s major rivers receding, the flood situation in 12 districts affected by the deluge over the past two weeks has started to improve. The affected people are preparing for their long trek back home to rebuild their lives.
Over the next 72 hours, the overall flood situation in some parts of the northern, central, north-western and north-eastern regions of the country—in the districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Manikganj and Shariatpur—is likely to improve, said sources at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The reports from the upstream and from home indicate that there are no immediate chances of any deterioration in the situation, with the rise in the major rivers, such as the Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Ganges-Padma, Surma and Kushiyara, which flow into the country across the border.
“There is not much chance of heavy rains during the period we have forecast,” Mohammad Arifuzzaman Bhuiya, a FFWC official, told The Independent yesterday, quoting weather reports. Reports from the flood-ravaged northern region bore testimony to his remarks that the most savage river, the Jamuna, has fallen from its peak danger level by 22 cm, anchoring at 32 cm above the red mark at Sariakandi in Bogra yesterday.
