Review decision

Hanif urges Muhith

Awami League (AL) joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday urged finance minister AMA Muhith to reconsider the proposal of imposing value-added tax (VAT) on the tuition fees of private university students.
“Last budget session, I told Parliament that the proposal of imposing VAT on the tuition fees of private university students should be reconsidered. Now, I again urge our finance minister to reconsider the matter,” he said.
Hanif was addressing a discussion, organised by the Jatiya Sramik League, marking the 40th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in the city.
Urging private university students to get back to their campuses, the AL leader said: “We shall take up the issue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and hopefully reach a decision in this regard.” He urged the agitating students of private universities to withdraw their anti-VAT demonstration immediately to help ease the enormous sufferings of city dwellers caused by their movement.
Speaking on the International Republican Institute’s (IRI’s) survey report on Sheikh Hasina’s growing popularity, Hanif said Hasina’s popularity has increased tremendously and is now over 80 per cent, while BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s popularity has touched rock bottom due to her destructive brand of politics.
“Khaleda Zia should give up politics immediately. Her own party leaders and workers don’t respond to her calls anymore, as has been proved during a recent countrywide demonstration convened by her party. No BNP leader or worker was seen demonstrating in the city on that day,” he added.
