The building of Mollarhat LKM High School, which is situated on the Meghna river bank, in Raipur upazila is in a bad condition. Its teachers and students are passing their days in fear lest they get hit by a storm and get buried inside the building. A visit to the place revealed a rather underdeveloped area thanks to the negligence of the authorities concerned. Guardians of students alleged that no step has been taken to construct a proper building. Often classes are held in the open space in front of the school building.According to local sources, the school was opened on 20 acres of land in 1994. It used to be a house made of bamboo. But later, it came to have a tin-shed structure, which has been damaged by a recent nor'wester a few days back.
Mizanur Rahman, headmaster of the school, said he had 613 students—381 of them girls and the rest boys. The school has six teachers, but it needs at least 12 teachers to properly impart lessons to students, he added.
He also said classes are held in five rooms of the school and the remaining three remain badly damaged. During the rainy season, water seeps in through the roof and the playground gets inundated by tidal water, leaving no scope for children to play.
This year, 105 students appeared for the SSC examination. As many as 93 of them have passed the examination.
"If the government improves the educational infrastructure in the area, local students can perform well," said the headmaster.
Local sources said the school is situated 25 km away from the Laxmipur district headquarters.
Israt Jahan Shuly, a student of Class X, told The Independent that there is a shortage of teachers and classrooms. "Besides, modern equipment, including adequate lab facilities and computers, are lacking. The students had access to only one computer," she said.
District education officer Sharit Kumar Chakma said: “I visited the school recently and saw its bad condition. But we cannot do anything due to lack of funds.”
The school has been short of teachers for two years now. “We have written to the higher authorities, urging them to take the necessary steps. If money is made available, a new building will be built,” the district education officer said.
