Only 3-hr rain floods most Dhaka streets

It took only three hours of pounding rainfall to nearly deluge many Dhaka neighbourhoods as the un-cleared drainage system clogged with poly bags, nets and garbage found it difficult to flush out just 81mm of rains between 6am-9am yesterday, leaving commuters bearing the brunt of it to negotiate the flooded streets. The waterlogging on streets also slowed down the vehicular movements, adding to the plight of people going to work stuck in traffic congestions.

Met Office sources said, the rains totaled 82mm over the city until 12pm with some worst lightning and thunder bolts sending fears down the spines of those who were out in the streets on their way to work or attend some business.

Some sufferers reported that at places the water even overran foot over bridges. The allegedly poorly engineered drainage could not clear the accumulated water on the Moghbazar-Malibagh flyover at Moghbazar point, causing waterlogging at parts of the flyover.

Jatrabari, Malibagh and Mirpur were among the worst affected areas where waterlogging and streets clogged with traffic  increased  the plight of people living in the megapolis.

However, the burst of rains also helped cool down the weather washing away the past four days of heat, the worst being on Wednesday when the capital saw its hottest day of the season with the mercury rising to 36.3 degrees Celsius.

Met sources said, more rains are likely in the coming days as rainfall activities may increase during the next four days.
