A young housewife was found lying senseless and starving on a road near Hathirjeel Project in the city yesterday. Police suspect the woman was deserted by her husband, who has been untraced for five months now. The woman, Rasheda Akter, hails from Narayanpur village in Brahmanbaria district’s Nabinagor upazila. Her son, Akash, told police that his father, Wazed Miah, 40, had left their home for Dhaka around April.
Akash, along with his mother, had come to the city in search of his father, who is a mason by profession.
Rasheda’s family alleged that Wazed was a drug addict and gambler. He often fought with Rasheda for money, and even threatened to marry another woman.
It has emerged that Rasheda had taken a loan of Tk. 35,000 from a local NGO five months ago and bought a cow for Tk. 26,000. Wazed had wrested away the remaining Tk. 9,000 from his wife and stormed out of their home.
Sometimes, he used to talk to Rasheda over the phone and demand Tk.1 lakh as dowry. Wazed threatened he would leave her if she did not give him the money.
These calls from her husband were the only ray of hope for the young woman. However, the calls stopped coming around three months ago. Wazed’s phone has been switched off since then. In desperation, Rasheda made several trips to Dhaka to find her prodigal husband. However, she had to return home frustrated every time.
Last week, she again came to the city with her son. The duo roamed around several areas, particularly Hathijheel, as Wazed had earlier informed her that he was working under a certain Sumon contractor at Modhubagh in the area.
Rasheda soon ran out of the little money she had and in the absence of relatives in Dhaka, the mother and son were forced to take shelter with a poor woman in a slum at Modhubagh. She had not eaten anything for the past three days, and fainted under the scorching heat of the sun while frantically searching for her husband in the bustling city.
“She was lying senseless on the road. Her child was crying beside her. Some pedestrians tried to revive the woman by giving water to her. They then alerted a police patrol team,” an eyewitness, Sheikh Samira Akhter Zinia, told this correspondent.
Later, ASI Afzal Hossain of Ramna Police Station took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the assistance of a kind-hearted CNG auto driver.
Inspector Mozammel Haque, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the woman was admitted to the hospital’s medicine ward.
No one had come looking for her till 7 pm yesterday, Haque said, adding that some kind-hearted attendants of other patients were helping her in different ways, including providing food to her.
Quoting the doctors, the officer said the woman had fainted due to starvation and weakness. She also complained of pain in her chest, he added.
