Defending champions Mariner Young’s Club consolidated their position in the title race of the Green Delta Premier League Hockey when they trounced Abahani Limited by record 5-1 yesterday at the Maulana Bhashani Hokey Stadium.
After the winning the match Mariner Young’s finished the first leg with 30 points from 11 matches, just three points behind Mohammedan Sporting Club, who finished on top. Mariner Young’s, who suffered a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Abahani in the season’s opener, Club Cup tournament, just took a sweet revenge in the first leg of the league. However, one the day, the match started with Abahani on attacking approach and in the third minute had two consecutive short corners which Mariner keeper Asim Gope handled with ease.
Abahani, who began the heavy possession style with obtaining two PCs inside three minutes, had the domination for 20 minutes and then lost the control, as Mariner bounced back strongly.
Mariner, who took time to gear up their pace with counter attacking methods, worked wonders as Zulhairi led them with converting a penalty corner on 22nd minute when Mimu played main role on the move (1-0).
And it appeared that Mimu had found a weakness in Abahani holding midfield area as every time he swiftly broke away the markers at speed resulting in end to end action around the half an hour mark when from his released ball Mainul Islam Kowshik doubled the advantage with a fiery hit on 28th minute (2-0).
Abahani despite kept the Mariner defence under tremendous pressure for some while of the early first half, failed to convert two penalty corners and conceded two goals in a quick succession inside five minute of 23 to 28 minutes, finally found the net on 29th minute. This time it was a rapid counter attack and Baljit Singh sounded the board with a close range hit on Roman Sarkar cross (1-2).
But Mariner Young’s, who stuck with their tactics of dominating possession, they snatched after 20th minute of second half playing with almost full command in the rest of the 70 minutes game, which eventually resulted to demolish Abahani by 5-1. Mariner Young’s were playing with full authority and increased the tally on 41st minute through Mimu who beat Abahani keeper Asim Gope with a strong hit on Shitul cross (4-1) and Naimuddin hit the last one to frustrate Abahani on 65th minute (5-1).
