BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will appear before a Dhaka court today in connection with the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases. This has been confirmed by barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, one of Khaleda Zia’s counsels.
Citing health issues, the former prime minister did not appear before court on August 10, August 27 and September 3—the last three scheduled dates for the cases.
On September 3, judge Abu Ahmed Jomadar of special judge court-3, Dhaka, fixed September 10 for cross-examination of three witnesses. The special judge court-3 was set up at the Parade Ground of Dhaka Central Jail Directorate at Bakshibazar in the capital to try the cases.
Earlier, the court had recorded deposition of four witnesses in the Zia Charitable graft case. The witnesses were ACC deputy director Harun-ur-Rashid, plaintiff of the case, sub-inspector Mahfuzul Haque Bhuiyan, recording officer of the case, Sonali Bank official Insan Uddin Ahmed and Sonali Bank cash officer Md Shahjahan Khan.
On August 8, 2011, the ACC had filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case at Tejgaon Police Station, accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
