The south-west monsoon may arrive sometime in the first week of June, as developments in the Bay of Bengal yesterday (Tuesday) suggested. The advanced elements of the monsoon arrived up to the coast of Teknaf and meteorologists said the low pressure area in east central Bay had intensified into a well-marked low, the first stage of graduation of the low pressure into a depression. This may provide the stimulus to the monsoon system to further intensify over Bangladesh, along the Chittagong coast, as it does every year, ushering in the rainy season.
This was the observation of senior meteorologist, Ruhul Quddus, as he spoke to The Independent on the Bay developments But the rain did not come early yesterday as expected after a hot and humid day on Monday. There was some wind later in the night. But not much rain, barring a few drops, which in the parlance of meteorologists is "trace", sometime around 2-30am.
But in the old quarters of Dhaka, as reported by residents, there was a fair amount of rainfall, driven by winds, that cooled the rest of the night, permitting people to get a good sleep after the Sahhri, the food and drink before fasting begins in the early hours. However, the good feelings did not take much time to evaporate, with the rising sun leaving the fasting people to sizzle under 35.4 degrees Celsius on a heat and humid day. It was a little down from Monday's city temperature of 35.6C.
But Quddus warned there was nothing much to rejoice about the arrival of the monsoon along the country’s south-eastern coast. It will continue to be as hot and humid on Wednesday too. It may be sultry because of the arrival of the monsoon along the coast, pumping plenty of moisture into the air.
Rain is likely in some parts of Chittagong, Barisal and Khulna divisions. Stray clouds will play hide-and-seek with the sun, not providing uninterrupted shade to people out on the streets of Dhaka, caught in traffic congestion.
