Govt must step down for neutral polls: BNP

The BNP yesterday asserted that the government must step down before the national election, dissolve parliament, reconstitute the Election Commission and ensure poll-time army deployment. “The government must resign before the elections. Parliament should be dissolved, new Election Commission has to be formed and army has to be deployed. Otherwise, there will be no polls in the country,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB).

He termed the EC as useless and subservient and said they could not even conduct a single election in free and fair manner. The EC that brings about changes to its law under government pressure must be reconstituted. Otherwise, there will be no election in the country, he said adding a new and neutral EC should be formed with people who can run the commission in a neutral manner. The BNP organised the meeting to mark 37th death anniversary of BNP founding President Ziaur Rahman. Mirza Alamgir, who presided over the meeting, called upon party leaders and activists to take oath again to protect and restore democracy in the country.

“We have to ensure the release of Khaleda Zia through waging vigorous movement taking the people with us,” he said. Speaking at the meeting as the chief guest, standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said Khaleda has been jailed unjustly by the government, implicating her in a false case.

“It is not possible to free deshnetri through the present legal system. We have to make preparations for a bigger movement,” he said. Barrister Moudud Ahmed said people know that there is a one-party rule in the country and three agendas including freeing Khaleda have to be implemented to remove the present government. Mirza Abbas, Goyeshar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan and Nazrul Islam, among others, spoke at the meeting.
