The ruling Awami League’s (AL’s) countrywide organisational tour and pre-election campaign for the next parliamentary elections have come to a virtual halt in the last couple of months. However, the party leaders say they will resume their election campaign and organisational tour in full swing after Eid-ul-Fitr. The party will also use social media for its election campaign ahead of the next polls, said insiders.
The ruling party’s president, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, formally launched the pre-poll campaign from Sylhet, the city of shrines, on January 30, while her party’s central leaders had also started organisational tours across the country, in an effort to strengthen the organisation before the next general elections.
In accordance with the party’s election campaign, the Premier has already visited Barishal, Chandpur, Chattogram, Khulna, Jashore and Thakurgaon and addressed public rallies there. She urged people to vote for the ‘boat’ symbol.
According to the Awami League (AL) insiders, the party was busy with its international lobbying ahead of the next general elections, scheduled to be held in the year-end.
Last month, a 20-member delegation led by AL general secretary Obaidul Quader visited India at the invitation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The party’s top brass is now working to fix slogans and themes for the next parliamentary elections, and the party will then go in for an election campaign with its all might after the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Talking to this correspondent, AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said: “Yes, the party’s pre-election campaigning was almost not carried out in the last couple of months as we were busy with the just-concluded Khulna City Corporation elections and other party activities.”
“But we will again start our election campaign in full swing after Eid-ul-Fitr,” he added.
AL organising secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan said the party’s pre-election campaign was not carried out properly in the last couple of months as the party chief and PM Sheikh Hasina had to visit different countries as the state guest. “But the party lawmakers and MP aspirants have kept on campaigning across the country for the next polls,” he explained.
Meanwhile, while discussing the issue at a programme in the city recently, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader had expressed his resentment, saying the next general elections will be held in the yearend but they were wasting time, holding seminars and discussions. He had also called upon the party’s leaders and workers to go to the doorsteps of the voters and seek votes for the party’s symbol ‘Nouka’ (boat), braving inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the ruling party has also started organisational tours across the country from January, in an effort to strengthen the party at the grassroots level by minimising the internal conflicts that have gripped its grassroots leaders and workers.
Party insiders said the main objective of the tour is to mobilise people’s support in favour of the party symbol ‘Nouka’ as part of the campaign for the next general elections.
