Nine more alleged drug traders were killed in reported gunfights with law enforcers early yesterday during the ongoing anti-narcotic drive across the country, reports UNB. Of them, two were killed in Cumilla and Kushtia each and one each was killed in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Satkhira, Thakurgaon and Barguna districts.
Besides, gun battles among rival groups left two alleged drug dealers dead in Jashore while one in Brahmanbaria. Another drug pusher was found dead in Cumilla. Reports reaching the UNB news desk said that a total of 117 people were killed in 'gunfights' across the country since May 12.
In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders -- Liton alias Kana Liton, 43, son of Abdus Samad of Poiyapathor area, and Baten, 34, son of Shahid Miah of Bakharnagar village of Muradnagar upazila -- were killed in a purported gunfight with police in Gunjar area around 12:30 am.
Police recovered a pipe gun and 400 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from the spot, said AKM Manjur Alam, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station.
Three policemen were injured during the incident, he added. Besides, Akter Hossain, 30, a suspected drug peddler and son of Mobarak Hossain of Barura upazila, was found dead by the Cumilla-Chandpur regional highway at Lagnasar in the upazila around 3am.
Azam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Barura Police Station, said Akter was wanted in four cases. In Kushtia, two suspected drug traders -- Mukaddes Ali, 42, son of Rezaul Islam of Munshiganj village, and Fazlur Rahman alias Title, 48, son of late Yakub Ali -- were killed in
a ‘gun battle’ with police at Shehala in Daulatpur upazila around 3:30 am. Azgar Ali, officer-in-charge of Daulatpur Police Station, said Fazlur Rahman was accused in eight drug-related cases.
Police recovered a pistol, five bullets, a magazine and 250 bottles of Phensidyl from the spot, he said, claiming that three policemen were also injured in the incident.
In Dhaka, suspected drug trader Sumon alias Khuku Sumon, 42, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Ashiyan City Park in the capital’s Dakkhin Khan area around 12:15 am.
Tapan Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of Dakkhin Khan Police Station, said they recovered one shooter gun, two bullets, four crude bombs and 1,000 Yaba tablets from the spot. Two policemen were injured, he added. In Mymensingh, suspected drug trader Mizan, 45, son of Nurul Islam of Dakkhin Kachina village in Bhaluka upazila, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police around 2:10 am.
Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of district Detective Branch of police, said law enforcers recovered 100 gram heroin, three magazines and a machete from the spot.
Mizan was accused in nine cases, including that of drugs and robbery, he added. Meanwhile, two policemen were injured during the ‘gunfight’.
In Satkhira, suspected drug trader Anisur Rahman, 40, son of Surat Ali of Pakuria village in Kalaroa upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Pilapul field under Deyara union around 2 am. Biplab Kumar Nath, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station, said Anisur was accused in 10 cases and a listed Yaba trader. Police recovered a shooter gun, two bullets and 70 Yaba tablets, he claimed.
Meanwhile, victim’s wife Nazma Begum claimed that a team of plain-clothes police detained her husband on Monday morning. In Thakurgaon, suspected drug trader Harun, 45, son of late Abdul Aziz, was killed in a ‘gun battle’ with police in Shitalpur area of Haripur upazila in the early hours.
Ruhul Kuddus, officer-in-charge of Haripur Police Station, said Harun was accused in several cases filed with the police station. In Barguna, a suspected drug trader, Firoz Mridha, 45, son of Hashem Mridha of ward-4 of Betagi municipality, and accused in nine cases, was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Kumrakhali village under Kajirabad union around 4:30 am.
Mamunur Rashid, officer-in-charge of Betagi Police Station, said a revolver, a shooter gun, four bullets and 240 Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
In Jashore, two suspected drug traders were killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug traders in Chanchra Raipara area of the district town around 3 am.
Being informed, a team of police went to the spot and recovered the bullet-riddled bodies, said sub-inspector Manjurul of Kotwali Police Station. They also recovered two pistols, five magazines and two packets of Yaba tablets, he said. In Brahmanbaria, suspected drug trader Jony Miah, 30, son of Firoz Miah of Baganbari area in Akhaura upazila, and accused in eight cases, was killed in a reported gunfight between two groups of drug traders in Khalajora area of Akhaura municipality around 2am.
On information, police recovered the body and a pipe gun, a cartridge and sharp weapons from the spot, said Mosharaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Akhaura Police Station.
