‘Youths in Bangladesh optimistic about future’
Youths in Bangladeshis are optimistic and want opportunities to take leadership, despite many concerns about social and political issues in the country, a new survey has revealed.
The research titled ‘Next Generation Bangladesh: 2015 and beyond’, was launched at a ceremony at the British Council Library in the capital yesterday, says a press release.
The survey found that 75 per cent of young people in Bangladesh feel that the country will be more prosperous 15 years from now.
The survey, commissioned by the British Council, ActionAid Bangladesh and the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), reflects the attitudes of young people between the ages of 15 and 30.
It also reveled that social conflict and violence were found to be linked to the underemployment that many young people face.
The field survey has been conducted from November to December, 2014, sampling 5,000 young people from 64 districts of the country.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder was the chief guest.
Mark Clayton, deputy British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Barbara Wickham, director, British Council Bangladesh, Farah Kabir, country director, ActionAid Bangladesh, Imran Rahman, vice-chancellor, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), spoke at the programme, among others.
UGC chief meets Australian envoy
Abdul Mannan, chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, and Md Akhter Hossain, member, UGC met Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Greg Wilcock in his residence on Tuesday.
They discussed matters relating to quality enhancement in higher education, academic collaboration, cross border higher education and collaborative research. The UGC Chairman is expected to visit Australia later this month, says a press release.
IT training for NSU students
An inaugural ceremony of the Top-Up IT Training programme for NSU students, supported by the ICT Division of the Government of Bangladesh, was held at North South University (NSU) on Monday, says a press release.
NSU has signed an MoU with the ICT Division of Bangladesh Government recently, under which a group of selected senior students of relevant undergraduate programmes of NSU will be trained on industry based up-to-date ICT related ‘Top-Up courses’.
World renowned consulting company ‘Ernst and Young’ will be the trainer for this programme for a period of 300 hours contact time.
The inaugural function of the training programme was presided over by Gour Gobinda Goswami, vice-chancellor (In Charge) of the university. MA Kashem, chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), North South University Trust, was the chief guest and Kamal Mansharamani, director, Ernst & Young LLP, Kamalesh Vyas from Ernst &Young and Enamul Kabir, director, Training, Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC), were the special guest.
New gold medal introduced at DU
A new gold medal titled 'Ambia Khatun Majumder Gold Medal' has been introduced at the Department of Oriental Art of Dhaka University (DU).
Managing Director of Mahin Group Abdullah Al-Mahmud handed over a cheque for Tk 5 lakhs to DU Treasurer Md Kamal Uddin on Tuesday at the Vice-Chancellor's office to introduce the gold medal in memory of his mother.
DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Chairman of Oriental Art Department Malay Bala and other faculty members attended on this occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student will get 'Ambia Khatun Majumder Gold Medal' award who will secure the highest CGPA in Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) final examination from the Department of Oriental Art of DU.
Football tournament ends
The ‘Annual Inter Department Football (Male-Female) Tournament 2015’ ended at Gono Bishwabidyalay, Savar yesterday, says a press release.
A total 165 female and 208 male students dividing into 11 female & 13 male teams respectively from various departments participated in the tournament.
Md Alauddin, vice-chancellor, Mawlana Bhasani Science and Technology University, inaugurated the tournament. In the final match, female team of Pharmacy department beats English by 3-1 goals. On the other hand, male team English beats Computer Science and Engineering department by scoring 1-0 goal.
Mesbahuddin Ahmad, vice-chancellor of Gono Bishwabidyalay, distributed prizes among the winners.
