An unusual calm has got hold of the Barisal University campus following abduction a leader of the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) by the activists a faction of the unit and his release afterwards.
The victim was identified as Taufiq Omar, a student of the Economics department and member of the convening committee of the BU unit BCL.
Firojul Islam Noyon, a BCL leader of BU, said a rival faction led by district BCL vice-president Sajjad Serniabad abducted Toufiq Omar, on Tuesday noon from his hall room at Brown Compound area near the university campus.
The abductors injured him by beating before releasing him.
He was later admitted to Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital with injury. Later he left the hospital at night.
The BCL faction Taufiq belongs to brought out an agitation procession on the campus and held a rally in front of the Awami League office on Tuesday afternoon.
They demanded steps for immediate recovery of the BCL abducted activist from his wounds and punishment of the abductors. Prof Shafiul Alam, acting proctor and chairman of Mathematics department of BU, said university authorities arranged treatment for Omar and teachers visited him at the hospital. Actions would be taken after investigation if any complaint was lodged by the victim, the acting proctor added.
Sajjad Serniabad, district BCL vice-president, denying the allegation of abducting and beating Omar, said it was a misleading information and Omar was only asked about his role and benefits by creating factions in BCL on the campus.
Shakhawat Hossain, Kotwali police station officer-in-charge, said the tension was created due to internal conflict of BCL and situation was under control. Now police are on patrol in the area and no complaint has been lodged in this connection.
