The city’s Iftar market has been gaining momentum since the beginning of Ramadan with locals making a beeline for different stalls offering diverse delicacies. Though most people prefer to have homemade Iftar items, some cannot resist going to the market to gorge on mouthwatering servings of jilapi, piajoo, firni, haleem, chicken tikka, kababs, lassi and dodhi to break their fast.

Some exclusive restaurants and eateries too are drawing in big crowds with their unique array of Iftar delicacies. One such popular Iftar restaurant is Chili’s, which is located at Shaheb Bazaar Zero Point. The outlet’s USP is its emphasis on nutrition and hygiene while preparing Iftar items. “We use fresh beef, mutton, chicken, vegetables, sunflower oil and pure ghee to prepare Iftar items,” said Hsainur Rahman, manager of Chili’s. Of its special items, asto (full) chicken is being sold at Tk. 250–300, grill chicken at Tk. 340, Kashmari jilapi at Tk. 240 per kg, Bombay jilapi at Tk. 140 per kg, while Jali kabab, Shahi kabab, Sheekh kabab and liver kabab are priced at Tk. 30–120.

Riaz Ahmed, in-charge of the Rahmania restaurant, said though the traditional items still commanded the highest demand, new trends too were fast gaining favour with their clientele. He proudly said that Rahmania had been serving its special firni to the city since the past 66 years. “In the beginning, firni was served in a clay pot and we have maintained the tradition till now. Our firni has now become a traditional Iftar item for the people of Rajshahi,” he added.

He said like last year, Rahmania was hosting an Iftar Bazar on its premises. Guests can enjoy the taste of chicken biriyani, beef tehari, shahi haleem, murgi mussalam, chicken kabab, shuti kabab, shahi jilapi and so on. Besides that guests can order special Iftar packages as well. “I have come to Rahmania to buy some traditional dishes like Shahi Firni, Shahi Jilapi and Shahi Haleem. I do so every year,” said Rustom Ali, a resident of Mirer Chawk area of the city.

Meanwhile, owing to hot weather, people are also going for the various kinds of soft drinks on offer, with Ghol made with sugar and milk cubes being the most favourite.

Tarikul Islam Bipu, a shopkeeper at Shaheb Bazaar Zero Point, said people from the the lower- and middle-income groups preferred traditional Iftar items like chickpeas, piajoo, jilapi, dates, firni, different types of kabab, kima and sweetmeats.
