Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) is recruiting watchmen flouting the policy adopted by the government and an order of the High Court (HC), alleged Chittagong Port Marine Contractor Watchmen Welfare Association (CPMCWWA) at a press conference yesterday.
The association in a written statement at the press briefing at Chittagong Press Club said some officials and labour leaders of the CPA have created a conflicting situation through appointing watchmen in the local and foreign ships in defiance of the policy adopted by the government and the order of the HC.
Since 2004, CPMCWWA has been struggling to establish the rights of the watchmen, the statement said.
In response to their demand, the government that took over during 1/11 changeover formed a four- member committee headed by Altaf Hossain, former commander of Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone), considering the welfare of the deprived watchmen. The committee formed a policy related to recruitment of watchmen. On November 7, 2008, Monir Hossain, secretary of CPMCWWA, filed a writ petition with the HC as watchmen were recruited ignoring the policy.
On November 24, 2009, after hearing the petition, the HC issued an order in favour of CPMCWWA. But the CPA filed an appeal challenging the order. Monir Hossain in the written statement said that in 2010 when the trial was going on, the authorities cancelled the old identity cards of the labourers and started to appoint new watchmen flouting the HC order. MD Selim, MD Gias Uddin and Md Mohi Uddin Kabir, vice presidents of CPMCWWA, were present, among others, at the briefing.
