A faction of pro-Awami League (AL) teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday laid siege to the vice-chancellor’s office demanding immediate syndicate meeting of the university. About at 8.30 am, around 20 teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Samaj’ took position in front of VC office and staged a sit-in till 3 pm.
They brought many allegations against the VC including violating university act, appointing deans, hall provosts and transport officials without the approval of the syndicate.
They also demanded the VC panel election and immediate punishment of teachers who allegedly assaulted their fellows recently. Associate and spokesperson of the group Professor Farid Ahmed said, “The promotion of teachers, certificate approvals of students, results of different departments have been stuck due to the regular syndicate meeting of the university for the four months as the authorities concerned of the university failed to arrange syndicate meeting during the time.”
“Professor Farzana Islam removed nine hall provosts by exercising special rights and appointed new ones without the syndicate’s approval,” he said. JU Vice Chancellor Prof Fazana Islam said, "We call the syndicate meeting anytime, if the situation will improve."
