PM’s India trip bid to retain power, says BNP

Staff Reporter

The BNP yesterday accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of going to India to seek the neighbouring country’s cooperation for retaining power. “Media reports have made it clear that Sheikh Hasina went to India not for Bangladesh’s interest. She did not go there to talk about sharing of waters of the Teesta river or to stop killings along the border, but to negotiate for clinging on to power,” BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told the media at the party headquarters.

He said that the PM went to India by spending money from the government exchequer to negotiate her bid to cling on to power. Referring to a report in Anandabazar Patrika of India, the BNP leader said the  government gave away everything to India by compromising Bangladesh’s interests. In return, Sheikh Hasina has sought cooperation from the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, to retain her in power, he alleged.

“She (PM) went to the ruling party’s (Awami League) usual shelter, India, to ensure another lopsided general election like the one that took place on January 5, 2014,” he added.

Rizvi’s comments came a day after the PM’s return from a two-day visit to West Bengal in India.

The BNP leader alleged that the internationally recognised “autocratic government” was now lobbying with her masters and excluding the people of her own country because she feared losing power.

He claimed the PM was well aware that the people were ready give a befitting reply to her government’s misrule. “The bell has started ringing for her departure. She won’t be benefit by negotiating with her masters by bypassing the people of the country. All power belongs to the people,” he added.

Rizvi asserted that the next general election should be held in a free and fair manner and with the participation of all political parties.

“The next election should be held under a neutral government, and there will be no election in the country without the participation of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. The BNP will take part in the polls under her leadership,” he said.

The BNP leader called upon the government to release Khaleda immediately and hand over power to a neutral government in order to ensure democracy in the country.

Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Habibul Islam Habib, Taiful Islam Tipu and Monir Hossain were also present at the press conference.
