EC plans three more city polls in July

STAFF REPORTER

The Election Commission (EC) is planning to hold elections to three more city corporations in Sylhet, Rajshahi and Barisal. EC sources said the schedule of these elections might be announced before Eid-ul-Fitr, and they might be held either on July 24 or July 25. The EC is going to hold its 30th meeting on May 29 to determine the next course of action regarding the elections of those city corporations. The commission has kept the matter of three city corporation elections in its meeting agenda. In addition, it would also discuss some other issues like municipality polls, upazila parisad polls, use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the Gazipur civic polls and other city corporation elections, and simplification of providing NID services at the field level.

On May 16, the EC issued an order to prepare the electoral roll and polling centres of the three city polls. The commission has also plans to hold the by-elections of Kurigram-3 on the same date with the city corporation polls. The Kurigram-3 constituency fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Maidul Islam on May 10.

According to EC sources, the schedule of an election is announced 40–45 days before actual polling. Accordingly, the commission has to announce the schedule before the Eid-

ul-Fitr vacation.  Earlier, chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda said they  planned to hold all the city corporation elections before the parliamentary poll, which is scheduled at the end of this year or beginning of next year. As per the Local Government (City Corporation) law, the civic polls have to be held within 180 days of the expiry of the five-year term of city corporations.

According to the LGRD ministry, the tenure of Rajshahi City Corporation will end on October 5, Barisal City Corporation on October 23 and Sylhet City Corporation on October 8. The last civic polls in Rajshahi, Barisal and Sylhet were held on June 15, 2013.

Recently, the EC completed the Khulna city polls on May 15 this year. Though the Gazipur civic election were supposed to be held on the same date, it was delayed due to legal complications. When the legal tangle was over, the EC fixed the date of holding the civic polls on June 26.

Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda yesterday cancelled his visit to Indonesia for participating in the “Electoral Studies Programme”, scheduled to be held from 26-28, June due to the Gazipur civic polls.
