Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday told Parliament that the drive against old vehicles fails to achieve any success due to non-cooperation from some unscrupulous transport owners, reports UNB.
“These vehicles return to the city’s streets when the drive ends,” he said replying to a scripted question from ruling Awami League MP Amina Ahmed (Women Seat-34).
The minister also said the government banned 20-year-old buses and minibuses and 25-year-old goods carrying vehicles in the capital.
Besides, plying truck on the streets of Dhaka city is also banned during the daytime, he added.
Obaidul further said metropolitan police, and executive magistrates of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and District Administration are enforcing the ban by conducting mobile courts.
As part of the ongoing BRTA activities, the mobile court headed by its executive magistrates filed a total of 5,724 cases, collected Tk 68,74,030 in fine, and sentenced 113 people to various jail terms as well as sent 280 vehicles to dumping stations from July 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015.
In reply to another scripted question from AL MP Dilara Begum (Women
Seat-20), the minister informed parliament a total of 88 projects involving Tk 5,235.87 crore are now being implemented under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) of the 2015-16 fiscal for maintenance, repair and development of the country’s highways.
