The High Court yesterday asked the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to pay Tk 1 crore as compensation to the family of six-year child Jishan who died felling in unfenced Adabar canal in capital March 9, 2018. The HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed issued the ruling after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by Children Charity Bangladesh foundation’s chairman Md Abdul Halim.
The HC also asked the government to inform it within three months on what step it has been taken to build wall inside the open canals of the city.
Local government and rural development ministry’s secretary, RAJUK chairman, Dhaka deputy commissioner, Dhaka South Corporation’s chief executive officer, DWASA’s managing director, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Adabar police station’s officer-in-charge have made respondents to reply to the rule within four weeks.
Jishan, son of Abul Hashem popularly known as Hashu Mia, residing at Naboday Housing, Adabar, Mohammadpur, died in felling into the canal, which was not demarked and looked like a rubbish heap, while he was playing cricket with playmates in an open space of Naboday Housing.
