Dhaka dwellers are passing hard times preparing meals for both Seheri and Iftar as gas crisis hits many areas in the capital since the beginning of Ramadan. Residents in most of the areas in the capital have complained of severe gas crisis. They said there is no gas supply from 8:00am until midnight almost every day, preventing them from cooking iftar items and meals for Seheri. Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company, the supplier of gas in Dhaka however hints no immediate respite, saying that they couldn’t keep up with demand increase in Ramadan this year.
MH Ashruf Ali, Director Operation of Titash Gas informed the problem had even begun before Ramadan, and said it can be addressed only with the supply of Liquid Natural Gas or LNG.
“We thought the LNG supply would be connected to the national grid before Ramadan, but it was delayed,” said Ali. According to the Titas Gas official, it faces a daily supply deficit of 300 million cubic feet. They are getting 1,700 million cft against a demand of 2,000 million cft. The shortage will persist unless the supply increases, he said.
Reports surfaced in a number of media said the Power Division, in a meeting with the Energy and Mineral Resources Division before Ramadan, had urged increasing the supply of gas to meet the greater demand for electricity.
Officials said to meet the target of ensuring continuous electricity in Ramadan, there is a shortage of gas supply in the household.
