The Barishal Metropolitan Police has sought media cooperation to curb crime and violence and improve the law and order situation. The appeal was made at a meeting with senior print and electronic media journalists yesterday. The programme was presided over by the BNP’s acting commissioner, Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, while DC headquarters, DC South, DC North, and assistant commissioners attended. Among the journalists, Murad Ahmed, former secretary of the Barishal Press Club, Zakir Hosen, secretary of Barishal Press Club, Humayun Kabir, convener of the Barishal Electronic Media Association, Rahat Khan, and Zohirul Islam spoke at the programme.
Media persons complained that police misbehaved with journalists and photographers while they covered spot programmes of the opposition. The journalists emphasized the importance of free flow of information, harassment-free, pro-people role of police, and pointed out that a section of criminals involved in drug smuggling were using 'press' stickers on their vehicles, thus undermining the goodwill of the press. They urged the authorities to put an end to the movement of such vehicles and arrest the so-called journalists using fake cards.
In response of the media suggestions, BMP commissioner promised to give information help and take steps to prevent the harassment by police of journalists doing spot coverage.
The BNP commissioner admitted that one of their major limitations was that a sizeable police force was engaged in protocol duties pertaining to VIPs instead of looking after law and order.
BMP commissioner urged people to maintain peace and give police information about criminals to help curb violence. The meeting was informed that the Metro DB had recovered huge quantities of drugs including 3.5 kg of ‘ganja’, 2,776 pieces of Yaba, 153 drug injections, besides an automatic pistol and others lethal weapons in the last one month. Police filed 107 cases against arrested 125 drugs traders during this time.
