Anti-VC teachers, senators stage token ‘senate assembly’

JU Correspondent, Savar

A group of senators of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday demanded Vice-chancellor (VC) panel election at a token ‘Senate Assembly’ held on the campus. As part of ongoing protest against irregularities and alleged university act violation by JU VC Professor Farzana Islam, anti-VC teachers and senators staged the token ‘Senate Assembly’ in front of VC office around at 11 am. Senators at the assembly denounced JU VC for her indifference to call senate assembly and regular syndicate meeting since several months.

They alleged that, academic activities is badly hampering while the higher degrees including PhD and M.Phil cannot be provided as the VC has postponed the syndicate meetings since nine months.

Senator Professor Tapan Kumar Saha said “We voted Professor Farzana Islam for Vice-chancellor post at the senate in four years ago. Those senators supported her, she is ignoring them right now and following divided rule policy by dividing AL backed teachers.

Professor Alamgir Kabir, another senator of the assembly said, “According to the university act, emergency senate assembly has to be held within 21 days after the submission of a memorandum to VC signed by above 30 senators. We submitted a memorandum to her in this regard. But, she did not take any initiative”.

Professor Md Bodiar Rahman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department played the role of token Vice-chancellor at the programme.

Senator M Shafiquil Islam and Professor Md Nazibur Rahman addressed the function as ‘Token’ Pro-vice chancellor and treasurer respectively while ‘Token’ Registrar Md Shahidur Rahman Porag conducted it. Over 35 anti-VC senators took part at the token senate assembly.

About the token senate, President of anti-VC teachers’ group ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Progotishil Shikkhok Shomaj’ Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder said, “We are protesting the irregularities of VC Professor Farzana Islam and her ‘despotic’ activities on the campus by holding such a token senate”.

“Though the assembly was symbolic but the participated senators were real. As the senate is the main policy making collective body for an university as well as maximum senate members demanded the VC panel election, so VC Professor Farzana Islam will have to take initiatives to organise VC panel election as soon as possible’, he said.
