Youth stabbed dead
A youth was stabbed to death in the capital’s Dakkhin Banasree on Monday night. The deceased was identified as Jakir. Rahima, a local resident of Dakhin Banasree, told UNB that she saw a gathering near ‘Chartola Office’ area when she was returning home around 8:30 pm. “I saw a number of people were surrounding a youth, who was lying in a pool of blood. An ambulance was seen parked there but it refused to carry him because no one was agreeing to pay for it.” Rahima then requested the driver of the ambulance to carry the seriously injured youth and also told him that she will pay the ambulance rent, she said. When Jakir was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the on-duty doctor declared him dead at around 9:35 pm, said SI Bachchu Mia of DMCH police outpost.
Worker killed in wall collapse
A tea worker was killed when a portion of a wall collapsed on him at Baluchar Jonaki residential area in Sylhet on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Shukh Das, 45, son of late Rajani Das, and a tea worker of Lokkatura tea garden under daldali section. Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahparan Police Station, said a portion of a wall of the house fell on Shukh Das while he was in the house, leaving him dead on the spot. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.
Sylhet’s rail links restored after 6 hrs
The train communications of Sylhet with other parts of the country resumed on Tuesday morning after a suspension of six hours due to the collapse of a tree on a train locomotive in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar district. Shamsernagar Railway Station master Kabir Ahmed said a tree fell on the engine of Sylhet-bound intercity train ‘Udayan Express’ from Chattogram in Lawachhara National Park area during a storm around 4:30am, snapping the rail communications on the Sylhet-Dhaka and Sylhet-Chattogram routes. Several hundred passengers had to undergo untold sufferings due to the accident. The rail communications resumed around 9:30 am after the tree was removed from the tracks, said Ismail Hossain, Sreemangal Railway Station master.
3 held with yaba pills
Members of highway police in a drive arrested three alleged drug peddlers along with 40,000 pieces of yaba pills and 100 bottles of phensidyl syrup from Kalakachua in Cumilla on Tuesday morning. The arrestees were identified as Nasir Uddin of Mirsharai upazila in Chattogram district, Alauddin Mia of Fulpaija in Bhola district and Babu Mia of Mathbaria in Pirojpur district. Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Moynamati Highway Police Outpost, said acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive and recovered the contraband drugs.
Prof Sanowar awarded
Prof Dr Md Sanowar Hossain has obtained the best poster award for his research paper on Nuclear Medicine recently, says a press release. He received the award from World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNMB) conference held at Melbourne in Australia from April 20 to 24. He presented his research paper there.
Rabindra Joyantee celebrated
The 157th birth anniversary of Bishwakobi Rabindranath Tagore celebrated in Barisal city yesterday paying tribute to the great poet of Bengali language and literature. Barishal University authority organised a meeting with colorful cultural programme on the university premises to mark the day.
VC of BU Prof SM Emamul Haque inaugurated the programme attended as the chief guest. Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilon Parishad organised day-long programmes at Ashwini Kumar Hall. The programmes included presenting songs, poems, dances, dramas, exhibitions on paintings of Tagore, discussion and competitions on creations of the poet, prize giving ceremonies.
