A faction of Awami League (AL) backed teachers yesterday formed a human chain on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus demanding the punishment of teachers who allegedly assaulted their fellow on April 17. As part of their pre-announced programme, over 100 teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’ formed the human chain at the Amar Ekushey premises at 1pm.
Teachers at the human chain have brought many allegations against the VC and one of them is that she has forcibly ‘removed’ nine hall provosts on April 11 by exercising special rights and appointed new ones.
“We are demanding immediate punishment of the teachers who assaulted our colleagues. We will continue our protest until our demand is met,’ said Professor Farid Ahmed, a teacher of philosophy department and General Secretary of the group.
The teachers also alleged that VC appointed those who had been involved in controversial activities on the campus.
Earlier, this teachers’ group announced a 123 member full-fledged committee of their organisation through a general meeting held at the teachers’ lounge of Central Cafeteria at 11 am. Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder of Statistics department and Associate Professor of Philosophy department were made the new president and general secretary of the new committee respectively while more 101 other teachers have got central and faculty post.
Meanwhile, a new pro-AL teachers’ organisation ‘Bangabandhu-Adarsher Shikkhok Parishad’ patronised by JU Vice- chancellor Professor Farzana Islam was officially launched yesterday.
