Bangladesh archers shine in most events

Bangladesh continued their dominance in the Second Islami Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) International Archery Championship when the local archers confirmed nine final spots out of 10 events. Bonna Akhter won bronze in the women compound women’s individual event yesterday.

Held at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium on day three, Roman Sana, Abul Kashem Mamun, Asim Kumar Das, Rokhsana Akhter, Tamimul Islam, Ibrahim, Nasrin Akhter, Bonna Akhter, Mohammed Ashikuzzaman, Ritu Akhter, all moved into  the individual, team and mixed teams finals events.    

Recurve men individual: Roman Sana, who eliminated from semifinal last year in this event, assured his final berth in the men’s recurve individual outplaying strong opponents of Estonia Oona Mart by 6-2 sets. Roman will face Bin Ali of Saudi Arabia in the final today. Tamimul Islam disappointed in this event when he suffered defeat to Bin Ali in the last four and failed to win bronze after being outplayed by Oona Mart Estonia.

Recurve women’s individual: Nasrin Akhter also disappointed after brightened her chance to make final but she conceded defeat to Unsal Begunhan by 6-0 sets and could not win even bronze when she went down to Tajik archer Tagayevar by 7-1 sets while Hira Moni won the gold of this event last year.

Compound men’s individual: In this even gold is confirmed for Bangladesh when it will be all Bangladeshi clash in the final of men’s compound event where Abul Kashem Mamun and Asim Kumar will fight in a bid to win the gold. Mamun defeated Hamid Walid of Iraq by 140-133 in the semifinal when Asim defeated his compatriot Milon Mollah by 141-138. Later Mollah also could not win the bronze.  

Fredrick Martin, coach of Bangladesh was very happy to see his two disciples making place in the final – “I am very happy to see both the finalists are Bangladeshis and I have no tension with his event.”

Recurve Women individual: Rokhsana Akhter moved into the final in the recurve individual women’s event when she defeated her compatriot Bonna Akhter who played the final in last year in this event. Roksana will meet a tough opponents, Iraqi archer Fatimah Al Amsadani, who is also the top ranked.

Roksana beat Bonna by 143-137 in the semifinal. However Bonna won a bronze defeating Estonian Emily Hoima by 139-137.

Recurve men’s team event: Tamimul Islam, Roman Sana and Ibrahim Sheikh defeated their Iraqi opponents Akadhim Ali, Mahmmood Ahmed and Slaman Ali Mohi by 5-1 sets.

Recurve women’s team event: Radia Akhter, Shapla Beauty Roy and Nasrin Akhter moved into the final of this event after having bye and now they will face Gasimova, Ibadova and Ramazanove of Azerbaijan.

Recurve mixed team event: Nasrin, who could not do well in the individual event, performed very well in the mixed when she pairing with Roman Sana moved into the mixed event final defeating the Kyrgyzstan’s pair.
