The BNP has alleged that the government is not allowing a British legal expert and adviser to come to Bangladesh to assist party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s legal team. “The government isn’t allowing Lord Carlile, a British lawyer and adviser to Khaleda Zia’s legal team, to come to Bangladesh,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. He was speaking at a press conference at the party central office at Naya Paltan in the city yesterday.
Rizvi said that Carlile had applied for visa to the Bangladesh high commission in London several weeks ago to join Khaleda’s legal team during yesterday’s hearing at the SC's Appellate Division.
But the high commission is yet to grant him visa, he added.
“It clearly shows that he government is unlawfully obstructing him to enter Bangladesh. We belive that the government has not given visa to Carlile as it doesn’t want Khaleda’s lawyers to win the legal battle and secure bail for her,” he added.
Rizvi also said that the Awami League-led government is not allowing Carlile to come to Dhaka, even though two foreign lawyers—one from Canada and another from the UK—had come to Bangladesh to defend Sheikh Hasina when she was in jail after the 1/11 political changeover in 2007.
He expressed hope that Khaleda would get justice from the Supreme Court. Currently, the hearing on the leave-to-appeal petition that challenged Khaleda’s bail granted by the High Court is going on at the Appellate Division.
On March 20, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that Lord Carlile had been appointed to help Khaleda’s lawyers to carry out the legal battle.
