After wreaking havoc in its path since Monday, the spell of nor'westers (kalbaishakhi) may start slowing down from Sunday, but rain will not cease, with showers ocurring at one or two places in the country, a meteorologist has said. A nor'wester blew across many places, including the northeast and southeast regions, where accompanying lightning and thunderbolts claimed a few lives yesterday (Friday).

In the north-eastern region at least three persons died during the nor'wester and rain late in the morning, reports said. A child was killed in Juri of Maulvibazar, a man lifting sand from the Jadukata river at Sunamganj in his boat was struck by a thunderbolt and a child playing in the open was electrocuted by flashes of lightning, the reports added. Ruhul Kuddus, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met office, said it is time for the nor’westers to take a break between Sunday and Tuesday. He said the storm that whipped up a little rain yesterday totalled a paltry 1 mm in Dhaka in three hours between 12 noon to 3pm.

The wind rose to 44 kilometres per hour and was recorded at 12-25pm.

But the drizzle and the lightning made it frightening for many out in the open going to offer Juma prayers in the city or returning from a shopping trip on weekend.

However, the southeastern port city of Chittagong had a a squall, whose gust reached 46kmph, was recorded between 5am and 5-50am. It passed away whirling over the port city between its highrises and hills that was felt more by those living at the foot of the hills and on pavements under the shade of highrises, witnesses said.

The rain storms, however, cooled temperatures across the country. In Dhaka, the maximum temperature was 31.2 degrees Celsius, bringing  a touch of cool to the rain and windswept city on the weekend.

The day’s highest maximum temperature was recorded at 35.2C in Khulna.

Ruhul Kuddus said the mercury remained down because of the rain and wind.

But the pre-monsoon heat would start to build up after the current spell of rain and wind would start to wane from Tuesday, the weatherman noted.

In its forecast for the next 24 hours, beginning at 6pm yesterday, the Met Office said temporary gusty winds with light rain/thundershowers and flashes of lightning may occur at many places of Sylhet, Mymensingh, Dhaka and Chittagong divisions.Khulna, Rangpur, Barisal and Rajshahi divisions may have rain/thundershowers, lightning, with hails at isolated places.
