The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday interrogated deputy inspector general Mizanur Rahman over allegations of accumulating wealth illegally. The commission started the interrogation yesterday morning, confirmed ACC assistant director (public relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya to The Independent. ACC deputy director Farid Ahmed Patowary quizzed Rahman for seven hours.
After the interrogations, Rahman told reporters that he had no assets outside those mentioned in his tax file. The police official said any journalist could ask ACC officials about his wealth. Rahman arrived at the ACC around 9am, responding to the commission’s notice.
ACC sources said Rahman abused his position to accumulate billions in cash, lavish apartments, cars, property, and fixed deposit accounts in multiple banks.
He is also accused of being involved in overseas money laundering. The ACC probe body also found strong evidence against Rahman of misconduct while on duty.
Rahman came under the scanner after he was accused of abducting a woman and later marrying her by force. On July 15 last year, Rahman had allegedly picked up a 25-year-old woman, Moriam Akter, from in front of her Panthapath house and then forcibly married her, according to a statement issed by Moriam’s mother, Queen Talukdar.
In the statement sent to different media outlets, Queen Talukdar also alleged that her daughter was implicated in a false case and jailed for three weeks. She got out of prison on bail a week ago. After news of the incident went viral on social and mass media, a three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.
Following the allegation, Rahman was withdrawn from his position on January 9.
