No re-test as leaked SSC questions reached few students: Nahid

STAFF REPORTER

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said yesterday (Thursday) that no exams will be cancelled and retest held, as the leaked questions of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams had reached only a limited number of students. He said the probe body to unearth the evidence of question leak has found evidence of question paper leak of 12 out of 17 subjects in the “kha” set multiple choice questions (MCQ) 20 minutes before the exams. About 0.5 per cent examinees, which is around 5,000 out of 20 lakh examinees, had got the question papers, he added.

The minister made the disclosure putting forward the report of the probe committee, headed by the secretary of Technical and Madrasa Education Division of the ministry, at a press conference at the Secretariat in the capital. Nahid said his ministry has accepted the probe report and its recommendations.

However, the body did not find any evidence of leak in technical and madrasa education boards.

Nahid said questions were not leaked openly. The incident occurred through a closed group on social media and reached a limited number of examinees.

He also said most of the questions shared on the social media were fake or were tampered with. “Considering all these aspects, the body recommended that it would not be sensible to hold a retest, as only a limited number of examinees got the questions,” he added. Nahid said his ministry has been

made the offender by blind allegations of question paper leak without any basis whatsoever. “It was injustice,” he added.

There were reports of widespread question paper leak in the SSC exams held in February. It earned fierce criticism from various quarters.

Although the government took various initiatives to stop the leak of questions, none of those worked. There were news of leak on the social media every day. Among the steps were the announcement of a Tk. 5 lakh reward to catch the mastermind behind the question leak and asking students to turn up at the exam hall 30 minutes before the scheduled time.

“It was a big challenge to curb question leak while holding the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams. There is no news of leak in the exams. This has been possible due to everyone’s cooperation,” said Nahid.
