Independence Day Kabaddi tournament will get underway at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Wooden Floor Gymnasium today without the players from the services’ teams.

This time only eight divisional champion teams will take part in the three-day-long final round of the tournament, where Basundhara Group and Runner Group remained as title sponsor and co-title sponsor.

Participating teams are Bogura (Rajshahi Division), Khulna, Mymensingh and Sylhet, who all clubbed into Group-A along with Kurigram (Rangpur Division), Barisal, Maradipur (Dhaka District) and Chattagram, have been pitted into Group-B.

Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation (BKF) general secretary and Additional DIG of Bangladesh Police Habibur Rahman revealed all at a press conference at the Dutch Bangla Bank auditorium of the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) in the capital yesterday.

Jasim Uddin, head of marketing of Basundhara Group, Anwarul Haque, deputy managing director of Runner Group and Faruq Rizvi, executive director (sales and marketing) of Basundhara Group, among others, were also present.

“It was scheduled that all eight divisional champion teams will play a pre-final round, from where top three teams will progress to the final round where they will clash with the seven services teams. But this time we’ve formed a 52-member preliminary national squad for the upcoming Asian Games from the services’ teams’ players,” said Habibur Rahman.

“And so, we’re going directly in the final round as the services teams could not get their players to participate in the tournament,” Rahman told media.

Each group champions and runners-up will cruise to the semifinals, which will be played on May 6 before the final match on the same day.

“We’ve earmark ed  a budget of TK 30 lakh. This year the champions and runners-up teams will be rewarded with TK one lakh and Tk 50,000 as prize money. Third-placed team (two teams) will be given Tk 15,000 each. Along with that, man of the tournament, man of the final coupled with best raider and best catcher will also be selected and awarded,” the BKF general secretary disclosed.

Habibur Rahman said that they will also keep an eye for promising and talented players for the next national team training camp this time around.
