A faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday besieged the vice-chancellor's office and staged a sit-in protesting ‘assault’ on their colleagues on April 18.
As part of their pre-announced programme, around 50 teachers under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Bishwashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Shamaj’ took position in front of the office of VC Prof Farzana Islam around 9am and staged sit-in till 1 pm. The teachers have brought many allegations against the VC and one of those is that she has forcibly ‘removed’ nine hall provosts on April 11 by exercising special rights and appointed new ones.
“We are demanding immediate punishment of the teachers who assaulted our colleagues. We will continue our protest until our demand is met,” said Prof Farid Ahmed, a teacher of philosophy department and spokesperson of the group.
The teachers also alleged that VC appointed those who had been involved in controversial activities on the campus.
Meanwhile, VC-backed teachers under the banner ‘Bangabandhur Adarsher Shikkhok Parishad’, denied all allegations at a press conference held at the Teachers’ Lounge of Central Cafeteria yesterday.
Spokesman of this teachers’ group Prof Bashir Ahmed said, “Demonstrating teachers are spreading false propaganda against JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam. This is very regrettable”.
He also urged the demonstrating teachers to help current JU authorities and abstain from any unwanted activities.
Earlier, six teachers were injured in a scuffle at the JU transport gate at on April 18 during a strike over changes in the post of provosts at a number of halls.
