BNP frustrated over Hasinas growing popularity:?Hanif

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has “become frustrated” on seeing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s growing popularity, said the joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL), Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, yesterday.
“The BNP has become frustrated with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rising popularity, while the popularity of its chief, Khaleda Zia, has hit rock bottom,” Hanif said, at a discussion organised to mark the 40th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the city. Referring to the International Republican Institution’s (IRI) recent survey report, the AL leader said: “PM Sheikh Hasina’s popularity has been increasing day by day due to her astute leadership that is taking the country forward, while the BNP chief’s popularity has diminished due to her destructive brand of politics.”
Criticising BNP’s Asaduzzaman Ripon’s demand to arrange an election to prove Sheikh Hasina’s popularity, Hanif said: “Why would we hold an out-of-turn election to prove our popularity? The present government would not hold elections each year just to fulfil someone’s wish.”
He also urged the BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, to seek an apology from the nation for unleashing destructive activities in the recent three-month-long agitation that caused the deaths of 150 people and left thousands injured.
Hanif advised BNP leaders and activists to overhaul their party by rejecting their “failed leader, Khaleda Zia, and corrupt leader, Tarique Rahman”, if they had even a little bit of love for the country.
Meanwhile, the BNP on Saturday snubbed the survey findings of the US-based International Republican Institute (IRI) that said the government has gained popularity. According to the BNP leadership, the findings are contradictory and divorced from reality.
Nielsen-Bangladesh conducted a survey between May 23 and June 10 for the US-based research organisation, IRI, on Bangladesh's politics and democracy. The results of the survey were published on Thursday. According to the survey findings, the AL enjoys more popularity than other parties, with 60 per cent respondents liking and 29 per cent disliking it.
