The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday stayed a High Court (HC) order that had imposed a six-month ban on the screening of a movie made on the collapse of the Rana Plaza building.
Altogether 1,129 people were killed in the incident, which occurred on April 24, 2013.
The movie is centred around a woman named Reshma Begum, who was rescued miraculously on the 17th day of the disaster in 2013.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the stay order in response to a petition filed by the producer of the movie, Shamima Akhter, challenging the HC order.
Advocate M Aminuddin, counsel for the appellant, told reporters that there was no legal bar to release and screen the film, following the apex court order.
Earlier, on August 24, in response to a writ petition, an HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam imposed a ban on the screening of the film for six months.
It also banned posting of any part of the movie, which was scheduled to be released this month, on the internet or social media.
