The floods and heavy downpour over the past two weeks have damaged huge quantities of seasonal crops, including aman paddy, valued at over Tk 450 crore, in the 10 northern districts of the country.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has sent preliminary damage reports from several districts to the ministry concerned, seeking post-flood rehabilitation measures.
Sources in the DAE said some 150,000 hectares with aman and aus paddy, along with other seasonal vegetables, such as red amaranth (lal shak) and spices, have been inundated.
DAE sources said 53,000 hectares of cultivated land—the largest area—was inundated in Kurigram district. Md Shawaket Ali Sarkar, deputy director of the DAE in Kurigram, said cultivators in the district have recorded losses of some Tk 350 crore, due to the floods and heavy downpour. "Aman and aus paddy, along with other seasonal crops, standing on 36,000 hectares, have been very badly damaged in the floods," said Sarkar.
Local union parishad member and landowner of Ghanashyampur village in Kurigram Sadar upazila, Ripon Miya, said he has lost over Tk 24,000, which was the cost of cultivating his 1.2 hectares of land.
Farmer Md. Sirajul Haque of Nijchandonbaishaha village in Shariakandi upazila of Bogra district said floods damaged his aman paddy, standing on 1.50 hectares. "I had cultivated 10 bighas of aman paddy, having spent Tk 25,000. But the cultivated aman is now totally under water."
The DAE’s deputy director at Bogra, Chandidas Kundu, said the department has taken initiatives to start post-flood rehabilitation programmes in flood-affected upazilas, including Shariakandi. "The floods and heavy downpour have damaged seasonal crops, including aman and aus paddy, on 5,000 hectares in Bogra district," said Kundu. Floods have damaged crops worth at least Tk 40 crore in Bogra, DAE sources added.
DAE sources said huge tracts of cultivated land, with standing seasonal crops, in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajgonj, Bogra, Gaibhandha and Naogaon districts have been inundated.
