Veterans of the Liberation War have expressed surprise over the government’s decision to merge the two International Crimes Tribunals (ICTs) into one.
A statement by the leaders of the Sector Commanders’ Forum (SCF), Liberation War 1971, yesterday said it was necessary to have more than one tribunal to facilitate the proper trial of those who had committed crimes against humanity in 1971.
The reaction by the freedom fighters followed a report by The Independent on Thursday that quoted law ministry sources as saying that the government has started the process of forming a new tribunal, likely to be headed by Justice Anwarul Haque of ICT-1.
“The move comes as the number of pending cases has come down,” the report had quoted law secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Md Zahirul Haque as saying.
In response, the SCF statement said, “We respect the political commitment of the Sheikh Hasina government to complete the trials of a number of top war criminals.
