The Jamuna (Brahmaputra) continued to play havoc in Sirajganj, Bogra and Jamalpur districts, affecting thousands, damaging the aman rice fields and vegetable patches, as cries for succour grow louder, report our correspondents.
The worst affected are some 2.5 lakh handloom workers of Belkuchi, Kazipur and Chouhali upazilas of Sirajganj, where at least 50,000 looms have fallen silent due to the floods, reports our Sirajganj correspondent.
In Bogra, the Jamuna continued to swell, flowing 77cm above the danger level, ravaging the Sariakandi, Dhunat and Nandigram upazilas, pushing up small rivers like the Korotoa and Bangali. Vast stretches of aman fields and vegetable patches, including chillies, have gone under water, as inundation continued for more than a week. Prospects of retrieving the crops are remote, says our correspondent.
Meanwhile, two bodies, that of a child and a college student, were recovered on Saturday from the Nagar river after a boat capsized on Friday, the correspondent added.
Sources at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), however, said that the overall flood situation in the country’s northern districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Sirajganj along with Netrokona and the northeastern districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj may improve in the next 48 hours.
The situation may, however, deteriorate in Manikganj, Rajbari, Munshiganj and Shariatpur districts in the central region, with the rising trend of water in the Padma over the next 48 hours, the FFWC added in its latest situation report.
