The home ministry has been trying to create a post of superintendent of police SP at the UN Permanent Mission in New York in a bid to deploy more policemen in different peacekeeping missions abroad.
But the defence ministry and the ministry of foreign affairs have seriously opposed the move, sources in the home ministry and the police department said.
In this context, the home ministry has prepared a proposal, which was placed at a meeting of the secretary’s committee on administrative affairs, held at the secretariat yesterday. The committee did not approve the proposal, the sources added.
The police headquarters had sent a proposal to the home ministry, requesting it to create a post of SP under the defence wing of the UN Permanent Mission in NY. After receiving the proposal, the home ministry sought the opinions of the foreign ministry and the ministry of defence.
The defence and foreign ministries both informed the home ministry that there was no option to create any police post under the defence wing of the UN Permanent Mission in NY under the rules, the proposal said.
The home ministry then placed the proposal before the secretary’s committee on administrative affairs, held at the Secretariat yesterday.
When contacted, senior secretary of the home ministry, Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan, said he wanted to create a police post in the UN Permanent Mission to coordinate between the UN and the police headquarters.
He said the proposal for creating a police post at the UN Permanent Mission was not approved as two members of the secretary’s committee on administrative affairs opposed it.
“We will place the proposal before the next meeting of the secretary’s committee after reviewing it,” he added.
Assistant inspector general (AIG) of the police headquarters, Md Nazrul Islam, told The Independent that a police officer should be posted at the UN Permanent mission in NY to further explore the possibilities of posting more policemen in different peacekeeping missions.
“Considering our needs, the authorities concerned should take the initiative to create a post for a police officer at the UN Permanent mission,” he said.
But a senior official of the foreign ministry told this correspondent that there is no scope to create a police post at the UN Permanent Mission in NY.
“The diplomats working in the mission are capable of coordinating between the UN and the police headquarters,” he said.
At present, there are 1,211 policemen and women working in six different peacekeeping missions and nine formed police units (FPU).
