National intellectual property policy soon

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said national intellectual property policy would be finalized soon to create and protect intellectual property, reports BSS.

"Although this matter had long been ignored, but following the directives from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the industries ministry has already prepared a draft of the national intellectual property policy. In consultation with the concerned stakeholders, this policy will be finalized," said the minister.

Amu said this while addressing a seminar titled "Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity" held at the CIRDAP auditorium in the city as the chief guest, said a press release.

Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury spoke at the seminar as special guest with Industries Secretary Mohammad Abdullah in the chair.

The Department of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (DPDT) organized the seminar marking the World Intellectual Property Day.

Trim Tex Bangladesh Limited proprietor Sahida Parvin presented the key-note paper at the seminar while DPDT register M Sanowar Hossain gave the welcome address. Creative women entrepreneurs, professionals, technologists, educationists, industrialists and business leaders took part in the discussion.

The industries minister said the proposed national intellectual property policy would highlight the issue of wider women's participation and increasing sponsorship by the government.

Matia Chowdhury said although no other government in the past had thought of protecting the intellectual property rights (IPR), but such initiative for protecting the IPR was taken during the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

"As a result, Bangladesh got the rights of innovating jute genome sequencing following Jamdani of Dhaka. If the doors of potentials are open, the women have had the capacity of stunning the world with their innovation," she added.
