Kushtia: A case was filed Wednesday by a father who came to know of the inhuman torture his daughter was facing over dowry, reports UNB. The victim has been identified as Shapla Khatun, wife of Sohel Rana, resident of Harinarayanpur village of Sadar upazila. Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, said that victim’s father Saiful Mridha has filed a case accusing Sohel Rana of torture, part of which was cutting off his daughter’s hair for dowry.
Sohel has gone into hiding though. Police were conducting drive to arrest the accused husband, the OC added. Family members said Shapla Khatun got married to Sohel Rana, son of Sobed Ali of Mongalbaria village of the same upazila, three years back. They also said they gave Tk 50,000 with gold ornaments to Sohel during the marriage.
But throughout the marriage, Sohel kept torturing Shapla for dowry. Things came to a head earlier this week when last Sunday, Sohel beat up Shapla demanding Tk 1.5 lakh, and cut off her hair when she became senseless as she was unable to bring him the money.
After this incident, she informed her father, who rescued her with the help of police. Talking to UNB, Shapla said since marriage, the members of her father-in-law’s house started to misbehave with her. They used to give slander in different issues. Her drug addict husband used to torture her for money.
