13 children killed in India bus accident
New Delhi: At least 13 children were killed and five critically injured yesterday after a train smashed into a small school bus in northern India, an official said, reports AFP from New Delhi.
The students, all aged below 10, were being driven to class in Uttar Pradesh state when a passenger train collided with their vehicle at an unmanned railway crossing.
The impact of the crash lifted the bus several metres into the air, killing 10 children instantly, district chief medical officer Akhilesh Kumar Singh told AFP.
“Three succumbed to the injuries at the hospital and five remain critical,” he added.
Nigerian parliament summons Buhari
ABUJA: Nigeria’s parliament has called for President Muhammadu Buhari to appear before it to explain what his government is doing to stop spiralling violence between herders and farmers in central states, reports AFP.
Members of the lower chamber of parliament, the House of Representatives, voted Wednesday to summon Buhari over the clashes that have claimed nearly 400 lives since January.
Liquor, meat banned in Sri Lanka Buddhist fest
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka yesterday banned the sale of meat and liquor and ordered casinos to close on the Buddha’s birthday in a move to appease the island’s religious majority, reports AFP.
The restrictions, which come just days after the government shifted May Day celebrations in a sop to Buddhist monks, will extend to tourist hotels for the two-day Vesak festival starting Sunday.
8 Taiwanese sentenced to death in Indonesia
JAKARTA: Eight Taiwanese drug smugglers were sentenced to dea th by an Indonesian court yesterday after being nabbed with around a tonne of crystal methamphetamine in a country that has some of the world’s toughest anti-drug laws, reports AFP. The men were arrested during raids last July, when the drug network’s suspected leader was killed in a shootout with Indonesian police.
