RANGPUR: Special importance should be given while formulating the seventh five-year plan to accelerate development and progress in the backward Rangpur region, discussants said here on Saturday, reports BSS. They expressed the views in the regional participatory consultation meeting on the draft of the seventh five-year plan (2016-2020) held at the Central Library auditorium of Begun Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) in the city.
The General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission and BRUR jointly organised the event chaired and moderated by Vice-chancellor of BRUR and reputed population scientist Professor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi.
State Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Alhaj Mashiur Rahman Ranga attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu and member (Senior Secretary) of the GED of the Ministry of Planning Dr Shamsul Alam attended as special guests.
Acting Registrar of BRUR Morshed Ul Alam delivered welcome speech in the meeting also addressed by Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Kazi Hassan Ahmed, Joint Chief of the GED of the Planning Commission Dr Mostafizur Rahman.
Member (Senior Secretary) of the GED Dr Shamsul Alam presented draft of the seventh 5-year plan narrating its various aspects seeking suggestions from the participants for its further improvement.
Deputy Commissioners, heads and officials of the government departments, university teachers, principals of different government colleges, NGO executives, lawyers, women activists, professionals, chamber leaders, journalists, civil society members, participated.
The participants said Bangladesh has been advancing fast to become a middle income nation soon when Rangpur region, commonly known as a backward one, has still been remaining behind the other regions and divisions.
They stressed setting up of more public, science & technology and specialised universalities in Rangpur region for eradicating backwardness in getting quality higher education in the region.
They asked for strengthening and revitalising of the Uttara Export Processing Zone and Land Ports, improve rail and road communications, reducing interest rates regionally, reactivating and internationalisation of the airports in Rangpur region.
