AL delegation’s India visit

No talks held with Modi over next polls: Quader

STAFF REPORTER

Nothing related to the upcoming national election was discussed during the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Awami League (AL) delegation that recently visited India, according to AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader. “Not a single word was exchanged between us over the 11th parliamentary election. But, some present at a dinner party following the meeting with Modi said that the AL can come to power again through the next polls,” Quader said while talking to reporters at AL chief Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office yesterday.

A 19- member AL delegation led by Quader met Modi on April 23 during a tour of India at the invitation of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The delegation returned home the following day.

The AL general secretary said, “We do not believe that any foreign power or country would help us to win the next general election. The people will decide whether AL will go to power or not.”

“We do not want to remain in power if the people do not vote for us in the next general election scheduled for December, this year,’ he added.

At the meeting with Modi, the AL delegation raised some bilateral issues, especially the issue of Teesta water sharing, Quader said.

“We informed Modi that people in a vast area of Bangladesh are suffering much due to the lack of water,” he told reporters.

“We have invited the BJP leaders in our country on behalf of the party and a BJP delegation led by its General Secretary Ram Madhab will come to visit our country soon,” Quader added.

Referring to the BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s passport issue, Quader alleged that BNP leaders are spreading falsehood over the matter. He also termed BNP leaders as ‘consummate liars’.

AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, secretaries Ahmad Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, Asim Kumar Ukil and Biplab Barua, among others, were present at the event.
