ICT sends ex-NSI chief to jail

Staff Reporter

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sent former director general of the National Security Intelligence (NSI), M Wahidul Haque, to jail, in a case filed for his alleged involvement in committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

A two-member tribunal, headed by Justice Amir Hossain, sent him to jail after he was produced before the tribunal around 11:30am yesterday (Wednesday).

The ICT also asked the prosecution to submit a report on May 10 on the progress of the investigation of the case.

On Tuesday, the police arrested the former DG of the NSI from the Gulshan area, just hours after the ICT had issued an arrest warrant against him in the case following a petition moved by prosecutor Tureen Afroz.

In the petition, Tureen told the court that Wahidul was allegedly involved in the killing of around 500 to 600 people near the Rangpur Cantonment on March 28, 1971.

Tureen also said that the investigation agency started the probe against Wahidul on December 5, 2016, and the investigating officer found evidence of his involvement in crimes committed in Rangpur during the Liberation War.

She also said that as a member of the Pakistan army, Wahidul had committed crimes against humanity by firing and killing Bengali people in the Rangpur Cantonment area during the Liberation War. The investigating agency is trying to find out how many crimes had been committed by Wahidul, she added.

In response to a query, she also said Wahidul has been arrested as he is a very influential person and is trying to derail the investigation process. According to the case documents, Wahidul Haque was a member of the Pakistan army and involved in killings and other crimes against humanity, including attacking 500–600 Bengalis and Santhals with machine-guns at the Rangpur Cantonment on March 28, 1971.

Wahidul was commissioned in the Pakistan army in 1966. He was adjutant of the 29 Cavalry Regiment in the Rangpur Cantonment till March 30, 1971 and then went to Pakistan.

He returned to Bangladesh in 1974 and got appointed in the Bangladesh Police in 1976. He served in different capacities and became the CMP Commissioner in the early 1990s.

He was a director of the NSI and became acting director general of the intelligence agency. He also served as director general of the passport department and additional inspector general of police.
