Woman ‘mistakenly’ shot dead

Feni: A housewife was killed as a bullet fired ‘mistakenly’ from the firearms of an alleged criminal at Nayanpur village in Dagonbhuiya upazila on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Sharmin Akter, 22, wife of Shamsul Haque of Noakhali.

Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Dagonbhuiya Police Station, said Sharmin came to his paternal home in the village few days ago.

On Tuesday, Jahangir Alam, an alleged criminal came to visit Sharmin and were gossiping at the room of Sharmin in the afternoon.

At one stage, a bullet from Jahangir’s gun hit Sharmin ‘mistakenly’, leaving her dead on the spot, police said.

However, when locals tried to nab Jahangir, he managed to flee the scene after pointing gun on them.

On information, police recovered the body and sent to Feni Sadar Hospital morgue.

Criminal’s bullet-hit body found

Meherpur: Police recovered the bullet-hit body of a listed criminal from Brac office area in the district town early Wednesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Khademul, son of Rezaul Haq of Baganpara area in the town.

Rabiul Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said hearing sounds of gunshots around 3:30 am, a team of police went to the spot and found bullet-hit body of Khademul. Later, he was taken to Meherpur General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Police suspected that Khademul might have been killed as the two criminal gangs exchanged gunfire.

Khademul was a listed criminal and wanted in several cases including that of robbery and murder.

Police also recovered a one-shutter gun, three hand bombs and some sharp weapons from the spot.

Worker killed during bridge

demolition in Thakurgaon

Thakurgaon: A construction worker was killed and two others including a female worker were injured as they were trapped under a falling batch of bricks during bridge demolition at Sangaon Sarkerpara in Baliadangi upazila here on Tuesday, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Aminul Islam,45, a resident of Nishchintapur village in the district town while the injured duo are Abdul Ali, 40, and Rashida Begum, 35, of the same village.

Witnesses said Aminul along with his co-workers numbering 8-10, was extracting bricks from the ground level of the ageing bridge around 10am. A pit of bricks abruptly collapsed upon 4/5 of the workers including Aminul, leaving three of them buried underneathThe trapped workers had to be rescued through a complicated process and rushed to Baliadangi Health Complex, where doctors declared Aminul dead and referred the other injured to the Thakurgaon Modern Sadar Hospital.

Locals claimed no one from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) was monitoring the work at the project when the collapse occurred, the locals claimed.

Mainul Islam, Engineer of the upazila’s Engineering Department, said contractor of the project Waliur Rahman has been spearheading the mini- culvert demolition project.

Firearms, drugs recovered

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered four pistols, two magazines, six rounds of bullet and 198 bottles of phensidyl from Telkupi frontier under Shibganj upazila of the district in the early hours of yesterday.

Commanding Officer of BGB 59-battalion Lieutenant Colonnel Rashed Ali said, acting on secret information, a team of the BGB conducted a raid in the area around 2.10 am and tried to detain a mishuk. But its driver fled away leaving his vehicle.

Construction of 122 bridges  going on full swing

Mymensingh: Department of the Relief and Rehabilitation has been implementing 122 rural bridges at a cost of Taka 41 crore in the district during the current fiscal, reports BSS.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Mohammed Hossain told BSS that bridges have been constructed under the supervision of the Upazila Project Implementation office (PIO).
