That the problems of Dhaka city cannot be solved overnight as stated by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Annisul Haque on Saturday is a reality. We do also agree with him that there is no magic or instant solution to the problems that have piled up in the city over the years. A report on this appeared in this newspaper yesterday. Over the past several decades the city has expanded phenomenally in size and its population burgeoned to the point of bursting at the seams. That the city has not grown in a planned manner is evident. A number of man-made factors are also responsible for the sufferings citizens are exposed to.
Of the many problems that have bedeviled the city, water-logging and traffic jam have assumed intolerable proportions . A few days back water-logging caused by rain exposed the city-dwellers to extreme sufferings. The taxpayers want long lasting deliverance from all these. After taking over the responsibilities by the two city mayors signs of change for the better are being noticed, albeit slowly. The city residents want to see the problems engulfing the city addressed urgently. But it should obvious to all that problems that accumulated over decades can be effectively addressed gradually on short-term, mid-term and long-term basis only after drawing up dependable plans followed by their efficient implementation.
It is also uphill tasks for the city mayors to solve the problems unless they get cooperation from different utility agencies. For example, the digging of city roads time and again by utility service providers, and that too in the rainy season, do a great deal of harm to people from dug of roads that take a long time to be filled up and repaved.
Over the past few years allegedly the funds allocated by the relevant authorities for development of the city were mostly misused. A section of corrupt people reaped the benefits. For solving the city’s problems in a sustainable manner, particularly water-logging, allocation of substantial funds is needed. But mere raising of this allocation will not do. The authorities must ensure that the allocated amounts are scrupulously utilized.
Besides, a fruitful coordination between the city corporations and the state utility agencies is an imperative to solve the problems. For instance, such nuisances like digging of the same road or sections of it at short intervals inviting so much troubles for the residents of an area, these things will not be there if this vital coordination can be achieved.
